Sticking to your diet and exercise is not easy and requires time, as any habit, to drill in. Being always on the run and having little time can actually make it harder to keep fit. Have a read of our tips to stay on track with diet and exercise when life gets busy!
Prep your meals
Being organised is part of the success, we all know that. If you want to loose weight don’t leave your meals to a chance. When we are busy, we tend to go for quick-fixes, unhealthy, sugar and saturated-fat loaded snacks and take outs. Or we fall back onto the old habits.
Spending some time on the weekend shopping for healthy snacks and cooking nutritious meals for the week to come will save you time Monday to Friday and allow you to go ahead with the plan. Meal prep may be hard initially but it will get better with time. I usually cook on Sundays for or 5 days depending on how busy I will be. Simple meals of complex carbs, veggies / fruit and a source of protein work best and allow for infinite combinations.
Alternatively, you can use catering services. Check My Prep, for example. They are Glasgow-based meal-prep company.
Another option is choose restaurants that offer healthy lunch options. There are few healthy restautrants in Glasgow city centre- check out for example KcalKitchen or Lean Factory.
Be realistic
Working or studying 9-17, anniversary dinner scheduled, a football match at work, hairdressers and your dog’s birthday coming up this week? Don’t expect yourself to go to the gym every day, not even five days a week on a busy period like this. Be realistic with your goals and what you aim for. Don’t aim for more than you can realistically do. Planning for 6 gym sessions, if you can barely squeeze 3 in will only lead you to disappointment and guilt, and you may give up the exercise altogether. Consistency is the key.
Grab your calendar, have a look at everything you need to do this week and plan your workouts accordingly. Can only go to the gym twice this week? This is better than noting, will keep you motivated and probably in few weeks time you will get a chance to go more often.
Working out with someone is one, more fun and two, it holds you accountable. We like finding excuses to choose doughnuts over deadlifts, but seeing our pal getting ready to go to the gym and sticking to their diet plan makes us more likely to do that too, no matter how busy we are. Plus, you can combine catching up with your friend with a gym session!
Finally, having someone for moral support during dieting is invaluable. Every time you feel like giving up, remember you are not alone in this.
Find a gym that suits your life
It is proven. You are more likely to go to the gym if it’s located nearby your house, work or university. That will allow you to use time you would otherwise spend travelling more productively.
There are plenty of centrally located gyms in Glasgow that offer good value on their membership prices.
For students, both Glasgow Uni and Strathclyde Uni gyms have recently developed amazing sport centres with pool, saunas and best cardio and weights equipment. These are usually located at campus so you can use a break between lectures to do your workout.
If you are an owl and prefer to train late nights (or have no other choice but train when regular gyms are shut), you may want to look into 24/7 gyms. Puregym chain and The Gym are some of them.
